H-1B Domestic Travel Reminder

There have been recent reports of H-1B workers being questioned about their immigration status by DHS / ICE while traveling within the United States.

If you are traveling domestically, consider keeping the following with you in your carry-on or saved on your phone:

1. Valid passport — do not rely only on your driver’s license

2. Most recent H-1B I-797 Approval Notice

3. Most recent 2–3 pay stubs

Also, make sure you know the basic facts of your H-1B employment:

• If your approved work arrangement is onsite, do not incorrectly describe it as hybrid or work-from-home.

• Know your base salary. Do not casually give an inaccurate range.

• If you recently moved, remember to update your address with USCIS within 10 days.

If you are questioned because your passport does not contain a currently valid H-1B visa stamp, stay calm and explain:

• An expired H-1B visa stamp does not by itself mean my H-1B status in the United States has expired.

• My lawful H-1B status in the U.S. is generally reflected by my valid I-94, H-1B approval, and continued qualifying employment.

Then provide three documents mentioned above if requested.
